The urge to possess certificates rather than to study to acquire knowledge is an anti-climax to schooling in Nigeria, requiring emergency attention, Mrs Adora Emily Ojo, a teacher, has said.
Suggesting the way out, Ojo, a member of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), called on the entire Nigerian society to address the issue of schooling and learning in the country.
“It is anti-climax to talk about schooling without learning, because the whole essence of schooling is to learn. The education system is comatose,” she stressed.
The quest for certification, she noted, has caused poor appreciation of literature. Elaborating her opinion, the educationist said: “Certification has become prime requirement, not knowledge.”
“Our children don’t read anymore. It is a crisis situation that calls for emergency.’
