NMA bemoans crises in Nigeria’s healthcare sector

Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has bemoaned the crises in the Nigeria’s healthcare sector, stressing that the country now needs 303,333 medical doctors, and 10,600 new doctors every year to provide deserved quality patient care.

Dr. Olumuyiwa Odusote, Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, Lagos State Chapter, disclosed this recently while enumerating the crises which the nation’s health sector is undergoing.

Odusote regretted that more than 40,000 of the 75,000 registered Nigerian doctors have travelled overseas where they practice the profession.

Describing the situation as worrisome, he said: “The health crises in Nigeria is unprecedented as the mass exodus hits alarming proportion.”

It takes a new patient two to three hours to see a doctor in government hospitals, he pointed out.
